Society of Indoor Environment Japan
Considering the fact that people spend the greater part of their lives indoors,
indoor environmental problems are extremely important issues with regard to both
the preservation of human health and maintaining comfortable environments.
Indoor environments involve a large variety of constituent elements, and till
date, research in Japan has been conducted by separate associations for each
individual element. On the international level, however, The International
Society of Indoor Air Quality and Climate was founded as a single large-scale
association seeking to develop measures to tackle indoor environmental issues on
a long-term and comprehensive basis. It has thus been increasingly important for
Japan to similarly consider both integrating separately conducted research
heretofore and carrying it out in a comprehensive and interdisciplinary fashion.
Toward this end, the Indoor Environment Research Association was established in
September 1994 in order to provide an avenue for researchers and other people
from various disciplines to gather and exchange ideas related to indoor
environments so that they could be put into practice for the creation of more
comfortable environments. In January 1998, the Indoor Environment Research
Association was renamed as the Society of Indoor Environment Japan, and we have
since been aiming to develop further as we seek solutions to indoor
environmental issues by approaching them from diverse perspectives.
